The Ultimate Bed Rack Setup: Retrax XR & T-Slot Accessories Guide

Retrax XR with Bed Rack

Rack Attack Team

For years, truck owners had to make a frustrating choice: you could either install a secure tonneau cover to lock up your gear, OR you could install a bed rack to carry tents, kayaks, and bikes. You rarely had the ability to do both.

The Retrax XR series solves this problem. By integrating a T-slot channel directly into the side rails of the cover, it allows you to mount a heavy-duty bed rack directly over the truck bed while keeping the cargo underneath secure and dry.

If you are looking for the best tonneau cover for overlanding, this is the foundation of your build. Here is exactly how to pair a Retrax tonneau cover with a rack, the adapters you need, and the reality of weight limits.

1. What is the Retrax Trax Rail System?

To mount a rack over your cover, you must buy a Retrax cover with "XR" in the name (either the polycarbonate ONE XR or the aluminum PRO XR).

The "XR" stands for the Trax Rail System. Instead of a smooth, flat side rail, the XR features a continuous aluminum T-slot channel running the entire length of the truck bed. Instead of clamping a rack under the truck's sheet metal (which the tonneau cover is now blocking), you slide T-bolts directly into this channel to mount your accessories.

2. Retrax XR Compatible Racks

The Retrax T-slots are universally sized to accept most major Retrax T-slot accessories. Here are the most popular and robust setups we build in our install bays:

  • Yakima OverHaul HD & OutPost HD: The Yakima OverHaul HD combo is a highly popular option for overlanders. The OverHaul HD is height-adjustable, meaning you can lower it behind the cab for aerodynamics on the highway, and raise it up when you need to haul long lumber or canoes.
  • From the Install Bay: The #1 Forgotten Part: When customers order this setup online to install in their driveway, they frequently forget one critical piece of hardware: The Yakima Tonneau Kit 1. If you buy the Yakima OverHaul HD towers by themselves, they come with standard bed clamps. Those will not work on a Retrax. You must buy the separate Tonneau Kit 1 adapter to convert the towers to T-slot mounts. (Note: Rack Attack occasionally sells these bundled together, but if you are buying parts individually, do not forget the adapter!)
  • Thule Xsporter Pro & Crossbars: Thule offers direct compatibility for the Retrax XR rails. If you need a heavy-duty setup, the Thule Xsporter Pro can be adapted to fit T-slot rails, providing a high weight capacity and aerodynamic load bars. If you just need low-profile crossbars to carry a snowboard or roof box, Thule's Rapid Podium feet slide directly into the Retrax rails for a clean, factory look.
  • RockyMounts Bike Carriers: If your main goal is hauling mountain bikes without throwing them over the tailgate, you don't necessarily need a massive overhead rack. You can mount premium bike carriers, like the RockyMounts HotRod or DropTop fork mounts, directly to crossbars situated on the Retrax T-slots. This keeps your bikes secure above the bed while your gear stays locked underneath.

3. Choosing the Right Rack Height (Adjustable vs. Fixed vs. Flush)

If you decide to mount a rack to your Retrax XR, you need to choose the correct height for your specific gear. Racks generally fall into three categories, and picking the wrong one will impact your truck's aerodynamics and garage clearance.

  • Adjustable Height Racks (Yakima OverHaul HD): These racks allow you to change the height of the crossbars. The OverHaul HD adjusts from 19 to 30 inches above the bed rail.
    • Best for: Multi-purpose use. You can lower the rack to keep a Roof Top Tent below the roofline for better highway gas mileage, and raise it fully when you need to haul a kayak or lumber that extends over the truck's cab.
  • Fixed Mid-Height Racks (Yakima OutPost HD): These towers sit at a fixed height, typically around 13 inches above the bed rail.
    • Best for: Dedicated overlanders. The 13-inch height keeps heavy items like Roof Top Tents and water tanks tucked safely behind the truck cab. This lowers the vehicle's center of gravity on off-road trails and keeps the tent out of the direct windstream on the highway. However, you cannot carry long items over the cab with this setup.
  • Low-Profile Crossbars (Thule Podium or Rhino-Rack): Instead of a full tower setup, these are simple crossbars that sit just a few inches above the tonneau cover.
    • Best for: Daily drivers who want to carry a snowboard, a cargo box, or a bike carrier, but still want to park in a standard residential garage.

4. Manual vs. Electric: The "Reach" Factor with a Bed Rack

When building a rack setup, buyers spend a lot of time thinking about weight limits, but they often forget about daily ergonomics.

If you install a tall rack like the Yakima OverHaul HD at its maximum height, reaching the manual latch on a standard Retrax PRO XR is straightforward. However, if you choose a mid-height rack (like the Yakima OutPost HD) or low-profile crossbars, reaching the center handle of the cover can become frustrating, especially if you have a Roof Top Tent blocking your overhead clearance.

If you are running a low-profile overland setup, this is where upgrading to an electric Tonneau cover becomes highly practical.

The Powertrax XR and Retrax EQ: Retrax makes electric versions of their T-slot covers: the Powertrax XR and the newer Retrax EQ. These operate using an electric motor wired to your truck’s battery.

  • The Benefit for Rack Owners: Instead of leaning over the tailgate or crawling under your bed rack to unlatch the cover, you simply press a button on a wireless keyfob (or your truck's factory keyfob for the EQ model). The cover retracts automatically, giving you instant access to your gear without fighting the clearance of your rack.
  • From the Install Bay: The "T-Rex Arm" Dilemma: We see this happen frequently in our bays. A customer will install a 13-inch mid-height rack with a large hardshell tent. A few weeks later, they realize that reaching under the tent to grab the manual tonneau latch is awkward. If you know you are going to run a low or mid-height rack system, heavily consider the electric Powertrax XR or Retrax EQ from the start. It saves you from having to crawl into the truck bed every time you need to grab a tool or a piece of camping gear.

5. The Reality of Weight Limits (Finding the "Weakest Link")

We see a lot of confusion online regarding how much weight a tonneau cover and rack combo can actually hold. To keep your gear safe, you need to understand the concept of the "weakest link."

When you combine your truck’s steel bed, a Retrax cover, a set of T-slot adapters, and a heavy-duty rack, your maximum safe weight capacity is always determined by the component with the lowest rating.

  • The Cover Limit (Static): The Retrax PRO XR aluminum cover itself can support 500 lbs of static weight evenly distributed directly on top of the aluminum slats.
  • The Rack Limit (Dynamic): When you mount a heavy-duty rack (like the Yakima OverHaul HD) into the Retrax T-slots using an adapter kit, the rack's dynamic (moving) weight rating almost always drops. You are no longer mounting to the truck's steel bed; you are mounting to the aluminum track of the tonneau cover.
  • From the Install Bay: Don't Void Your Warranty: Dynamic weight is the force applied when your truck is bouncing down a highway or hitting a pothole on a dirt trail. Before you mount a Roof Top Tent and hit the trails, you must check the specific manufacturer weight limits for all your parts especially the T-slot adapter kit. The adapter is usually the weakest link in the system. If you overload the rack and go off-roading, the upward pulling force can damage the T-slot rails. Always calculate the weight of your tent plus your gear, find the lowest weight limit in your specific system, and stay under it to keep your setup secure and your warranty intact.

6. Installation and Maintenance

Sliding a rack into the Retrax rails is a straightforward process. You slide the T-bolts into the channel, drop the rack towers onto the bolts, and tighten the nuts.

Because of this bolt system, the entire rack can be removed from the truck in about 10 minutes if you need full overhead clearance to load a refrigerator or a dirt bike.

From the Install Bay: Keep the Tracks Clean: Most customers leave the rack in one position and rarely shift the towers. Because of this, dirt, pine needles, and leaves easily accumulate inside the T-slot channels and the Retrax canister. Do not use WD-40 or heavy lubricants in the tracks; this will attract more dirt and can void your Retrax warranty. The channels are wide enough that you can simply take a garden hose and spray the dirt and leaves out of the tracks and the canister. Do this regularly so the cover doesn't grind or make noise when you roll it open.

7. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I open the Retrax cover while the rack is loaded? Yes. This is the primary reason the Retrax XR series exists. The rack mounts to the outer edges of the side rails, leaving the center of the bed entirely unobstructed. You can open and close the tonneau cover freely, even with a tent or kayaks fully loaded on the rack above it.

Do I need to drill into my truck to install the Retrax XR or the rack? No. The Retrax cover secures to your truck bed using a heavy-duty clamp system. The rack then mounts directly into the tonneau cover's T-slots. The entire system requires zero drilling and can be completely removed if you ever sell the truck.

Can I take my truck through a car wash with a Retrax and rack installed? You can take the Retrax tonneau cover through a standard automated or touchless car wash. However, if you have a bed rack, crossbars, or a tent mounted to the T-slots, you must avoid automated car washes with spinning brushes. The brushes will catch on the rack and cause severe damage to the wash bay and your vehicle. Stick to touchless washes or hand-washing.

Does a tonneau cover with a rack improve gas mileage? A closed tonneau cover reduces tailgate drag, which generally provides a slight improvement to highway fuel efficiency. However, adding a bed rack and a Roof Top Tent introduces new wind resistance, which might have slight effect on mileage. Using an adjustable rack to keep the tent positioned below the roofline is the best way to minimize this drag.

Can I add the XR T-slot rails to my standard Retrax cover later? No, you cannot. If you purchase a standard Retrax ONE MX or PRO MX, you cannot simply bolt the T-slot tracks onto it later. The Trax Rail System is physically integrated into the specific side rails of the "XR" models at the factory. If you think you might ever want to add a bed rack, a Roof Top Tent, or crossbars in the future, you must buy an XR series cover from the very beginning.
